My dad used to race at winston county in the early 70's. He had a 68 camaro and 67 chevelle. Anyway he said the best builder driver there was an older man man named earnest marcum. He ran a 66 chevy 2 with a 283 glide. Dad said they never could give him a run. I heard that marcum won 78 out of 80 races one year and he could have won the other 2 because the other driver redlighted but he broke a u joint. By what I have heard he has passed on but he would be a guy I would have loved to meet. I like hearing the stories of Earnest Marcum, Wallace Barton,  Big Money Ralph Clanton and others. I would love to have gotten to see this. I have heard of the winston county shaker and the pony express mustangs. Anyway I was wondering if anyone else had any more stories about winston county in the early 70's

You might go by Dennis Marcum's machine shop in Winfield. He could tell you lots of stories about Earnest as that was his Dad.

Speedy, dont forget Fri night, Sat night and Sunday afternoon. I saw them at lots of different tracks. Even here, I remember some that would run Blue Mtn on Fri, Myrtle or Byhalia on Sat., Fulton on Sunday afternoon, finish that up and run at Holly Springs on Sunday night.

Gas was a "little" cheaper then.

I meant 78 rounds. The story I heard from dad was that he could have won the other 2 because the other car redlighted but he broke the driveshaft and didn't let it roll through because he was scared it would mess up the transmission

I was not going to say anything about 78 wins in a year

theres tracks  that run 2 or 3 times a week.   but 78 rounds  in a row is  having you  stuff togeather
